Huon pine in a laminated neck?

Post by Luke72 » Sat May 05, 2018 11:05 pm

Hi
I had this idea to laminate a neck using a huon pine centre strip (8mm - 10mm wide) in a Qld Maple neck. Has anyone here used huon in a laminated neck? The spec's on the wood data base for the 2 are quite similar.Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.
Thanks

I haven’t replied so far because I have not used Huon pine in this way. But now you have me thinking. When looking at the specs it does indeed, seem to be a good contender for guitar neck building. It has very similar characteristics to mahogany, which most would consider to be the gold standard. One key factor would be stability and resistance to warping or shrinking. Huon Pine has been a prized boat building timber where those traits are important, so presumably it would hold up well. It certainly would look nice laminated into a multi-piece neck. Maybe best with mahogany where the colour contrast would be greater, compared with Qld maple which is closer in colour to the Huon. I reckon you should give it a go.

Thanks for your reply. I'd already convinced myself that it is worth giving it a go but I was beginning to thinking my idea was maybe a little on the crazy side! The spec's just seemed...good. I couldn't really find a reason NOT to try it, especially if it is in a laminate neck, which is why i put the question to the good people of the ANZLF. Good point about better contrast with Mahogany. I'll keep that in mind.

I built a Terz with a Huon Pine neck

Make sure you've got lots of carbon fibre in it!!

Thanks Bob. So how did that little terz sound? I've not had to go down the carbon fibre path before, but since i'm there now... i might get really adventurous with the neck. Do you know of any Australian suppliers of CF neck rods? As we all know, postage from stewmac can be a deal breaker sometimes, and I see there are some on the electronic bay shops...

Though their sizes are limited. I've purchased from them before and had good service.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Are the rods as strong as the rectangular CF rods? What size diameter rods have you used???

just noticed they have 6mm x 4mm strip and bar... that should do the trick. Do you need to epoxy these in or just a snug fitting slot?

That's the size I buy from them Luke, you have to spend a certain amount on an order ( about $30 ) so I buy about 6 lengths at a time, they're pretty fast with their orders. Yes you need epoxy.

Ive used these guys to source CF tow and matting for my builds. Good service and reasonable pricing.
