End of the week how to, how to fret skim

Post by simso » Fri May 11, 2018 7:55 pm

Process I use to skim slightly high frets.

I use this process on brand new unworn frets or a recently refretted / fret levelled Guitar

Good one Steve. Did you make that adjustable sanding beam?

I'm always confused when I see something like this. When we level frets under string tension aren't you removing any relief you had?
Thanks

No, because the jig allows you to dial relief into the shape of the sanding board

OK, that makes sense. Usually I see the type of thing with a flat leveling device used under tension.
Thanks

Here is a link to the Katana website. Pricey! It would be nice to see the one Steve made himself, and some comments re how it compares to the bought one.

First, that link is to his single action unit, no disrespect but it’s pretty well useless, it starts with relief at 12 thou, sorry no Guitar I ever Setup has 12 thou relief, you need to be able to adjust it to dead flat, that one you cannot.

The unit I have is his dual action truss model, he notes it’s a special request, definetly request it if you buy one.

I will take a photo tomoz of my original one, not flash looking at all.

One of the reasons I did not show it in my walk through, didn’t want to use anything that people couldn’t readily buy and simply use.

The katana is pretty Nice, but as you noted, really expensive.

One of the reasons I have such a range of tooling is becuase time is money, if somthing takes too long to do then I’m not making profit, if I have to hire another person then I’m making less profit, if I am charging out 60-90 an hr and it takes me 4 hrs to make a jig, then I will simply buy the jig as that’s 240-360 I have not brought into the shop.

Note this theory of economics only works if your incoming workload is always greater than your outgoing, so in essence you don’t have the luxury of that spare time

We have a commercial building in a commercial district, overheads hurt.

Thanks, Steve. I have developed a lot of respect for your skills and business through the posts that you have on this forum. It's a tough gig mate! You must be very passionate about what you do. All the best! - Ross

Noticed in my photo, the guitar it’s sitting in front off.

How’s this for a funky neck, I pulled this off as it was broken and just fitted a plain neck to get him going, got to work out the feasibility of getting cast ally tig welded.

I have a tig welder but don’t trust my skill set enough to do the job
