White purfling strip

Post by Cutty » Sat Dec 08, 2018 8:45 am

G'day folks, been a casual observer for a while and this is my first post so be gentle :)

On my next project I have a binding strip down the back with a white strip either side. The back binding will be the same strip so the white on the back will match the back strip. I then want to continue the strip into the end graft but the graft will be wider than the binding strip.

I figured I'd just get a plain white purfling strip and use that but there doesn't seem to be anywhere that sells just a plain white strip (that I could find anyway). So the question, can I make my own and if so, what material would I use to do that?

I've used strips of maple wood veneer as well as fibre veneers..I usually get them from LMI: https://www.lmii.com/150-fiber-veneers

You could also get some W/B purfling and carefully scrape off the outside black layer leaving the white.

I go to a veneer supplier and donate to the "Christmas party" a small sum of cash and the storeman shows me lots of nice veneers that I can choose from. One simply needs to ask the right person in the right business. Cheers! Ross

I buy white and black fibre veneer sheets from RC tonewood it's pricey with post but lasts for years. Wayne

I’d use maple veneer as suggested above.

It’ll be much friendlier during the sanding process. I’ve had issues with 0.5mm ABS plastic melting when I sand as it heats and softens so fast, then it’s a pain in the rear to repair, whereas veneer is easy to glue and won’t have the sanding problem.

Veneer can be stabilised with a size coat of thin HHG, then it can be worked and sanded if there are problems with the material. Cheers! Ross

I laminate with veneers all the time and with the hundreds of guitars I’ve built I’ve never had to stabilise any. Just glue it up with titebond and carve away.

Thanks for that tip. To date I've only used domestically sourced timbers.

What, if any, are the issues with importing wood from overseas? Any problems with customs etc.?

Veneer wont cause you any issues. AQIS usually only get interested if your wood has bark and/or bugs on it.

Martin is right, there's no problem bringing in most guitar timber, I've never had any issues. The only time I had stuff confiscated was when I bought some Tagua nuts, which are a completely different story. ( that was a $16 lesson not exactly the end of the world  ) Wayne

This is maple veneer as purfling with cocobolo binding strips. Very simple to cut from sheets with scissors. Glues, scrapes and sands well. I bought it in Sydney. I am sure you would find a supplier in Adelaide.

Thanks Wayne,

I looked on ALS originally but was searching for purfling so didn't find these.

Cheers!
