To flatten a handplane base, we can use wet/dry on a sheet of plate glass so i wondered about doing the same with 16" length of 50mm x 25mm gal box tube steel. Do u think this good produce an equivalent outcome to the purchased product?
Thnx. Frank

I use a spirit level that i've shortened to about 400mm with wet and dry glued to it, it was an old one I had laying around.

I saw a cheap one on etsy the other day. I haven't bought one so I can't speak to the quality etc but the price is very appealing:

Made one from an old smoothing file and a QLD maple offcut. Very happy with its performance. Inspired by Stewmac

Thnx Geoff. What is its length?
I looked at getting a longer (12") fine mill file once for fret levelling but struggled to get one that was truly flat. I went to a reputable engineering tool supplier in melb , checked 8 of his stock sgainst my precision straight edge but couldn't find a good one.

IMHO length is vital,
A 16" beam with 320 grit is far superior to a shorter file, even if you get a good one.
