You can ask questions here about Trevor and Gerard's exciting new book on Luthiery.

Paulownia fas bridge material?

Post by JurgenV » Sun Oct 20, 2019 4:35 am

I wasn´t sure if I should start a new thread for this or if I should post in the old thread with the two OOO I´m building.

I had some problems to get the weight of my bridge under 23gr with my walnut blank so I ordered Padouk at my wood supplier. I asked for a blank with low density and explained to him why. When he send the wood he included a piece of Paulownia wood for free and told me to try it as it´s very light and strong.
Does anyone have experience with this wood and perhaps used it already for making a bridge?

is there any way of correcting the text or title of a posted thread?
That´s already the second time I made a mistake in the title and couldn´t find a way to correct it

The Paulownia I've had is only one step removed from balsa and quite soft. I doubt it would hold up using the designs in the books. With some very cunning design work it might work, but I suspect some pretty complicated manufacturing would be required.

Thank you for the fast reply Trevor.
Means I can save my time and leave this wood for some other project (whatever that will be). Let´s see how far down I will get the weight of the padouk bridge.

I'd be happy with 23 grams.
