Violin vice.

Post by Robinm » Thu May 19, 2022 5:48 am

Just finished a violin vice/clamp based on a series of photos of a device made by Stephen Churchill, an American violin maker.

Seems to be functioning OK ; about to start my first solo - without my tutor breathing down my neck - neck mortise...bit nervous, hope I've measured it correctly.

It’s funny that was what I thought. (As in clamping to the bench)
I guess we always try to imagine how we would use such a jig in practical terms.

I imagine getting instrument supples is pretty difficult where you are....?

I have great admiration for anyone who can do the carving of things like violins or arch top guitars. It is hard enough getting The plates of ordinary guitars right.

Cheers Dave

Hi Guys, sorry for the long delay in replying. I added a 25mm battern on the base board that can either be clamped into a bench vice or used as a bench hook - not very stable, in bench hook mode but passable for some actions. The clamp makes life much easier for a lot of tasks and I'm glad to say it's been sometime since an instrument has unexpectedly left my work bench for the floor.
