This is why you should always take rental car insurance
About three years ago we had a few problems from the excessive rain. Mud slides and roads washed out all over this side of the state. It was really ugly some places. There was a family from out of town that had rented a car and drove down to check out Mt Rainer. They didn't listen to the weather report or didn't realized how severe it was gong to be. They were air lifted out because the road washed out on both sides of them. The car was fine, but it was not going anywhere any time soon. The state Department of Transportation said that because the road was to a remote location and there were so many other populated places that were issues, that it could take a year or longer to go fix the road, if they fixed it at all.
You guessed it, they didn't have insurance. They had to pay for the car. It was cheaper than the daily rental fee.
I have always gotten rental insurance ever since.
